Empty Pismo Clam Shell on Pismo Beach | ©Deborah Dennis

One of the best places to dig for Pismo Clams is Pismo Beach. A beautiful sandy beach located in Central California. Once a cherished central California fishery, Pismo clams went missing from their namesake beach for decades. Clams can live a very long time. In 1964, a surveyor found a 53-year-old Pismo clam — the oldest on record.

As of Spring of 2022, the treasured shellfish, however, are now making a steady, triumphant return. No one knows exactly why but there are a lot of Pismo clams once again.

Clamming is legal in Pismo Beach with a valid fishing license. You can’t keep any clam less than 4 1/2 inches in diameter and you can only dig for them at certain times of the year.

We had a visit to Grandma Moses’ farmhouse in Eagle Bridge, NY which is about 20 miles from my hometown in Stillwater, NY. Her great grandson Will Moses still lives there and carries on the painting & farming traditions.

In case you didn’t know, Grandma Moses was born in 1860 and didn’t start painting until she was 78 & only because farm work got too hard. She was “discovered” in 1938 by a NYCity art collector who saw her paintings displayed in a small town pharmacy window.

Grandma Moses was labeled a Self-Taught or primitive folk artist who was hailed for their authentic picture making skills. By the age of 80, she had her first solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. She quickly became a household name with her paintings printed on holiday cards, dinner plates and fabrics. She made over 1000 paintings before her death at 101 in 1961.

She captured that idyllic bygone era of rural American life. Her images still remind us of a timeless simple country life. A kind of life that a few of us may still be seeking.
